Three Ways That COVID-19 Will Change The Workplace In 2022
Back To Blogs List
There are no two ways about it, the events of 2020 change the way that workplaces operated and will continue to operate into the future. Even after a year, whether the changes to workplace environments will be permanent is still yet to be seen, however, one thing we can say with a level of certainty is that 2022 will be defined by a radically changed working environment.
NPS Commercial Office Furniture has reported a significant increase in the number of individuals investing in home office setups. This is likely a direct response to the increased WFH setup that individuals are adopting as a fall out from the COVID-19 pandemic. But here are three other ways that the workplace will change in 2022 and beyond.
Offices Become Residential
In 2021, new office tenancies were down by a staggering 87% - which, in the context of the last twelve months, makes complete sense. However, for commercial real estate owners and commercial real estate agents, the shift away from commercial lettings and purchases was a threat to the industry. In 2022, we expect to see a number of offices converted into traditional residential buildings as more companies adopt a work from home arrangement.
The Emphasis is on Work Delivered, Not Time on Desk
It makes sense to measure the amount of work that is delivered, rather than the time that is spent at a desk. Afterall, it doesn’t take much effort to lose an entire afternoon down a YouTube rabbit hole or on a Facebook Stalk. More than 76% of office workers interviewed by the Huffington Post in November 2020 reported that the amount of time that they were spending on work related tasks was down, while their output was drastically higher.
Flexible Arrangements
In 2022, employees want more flexibility around where they work. It makes sense, with the average daily commute time in the United Kingdom more than 1hr 12mins, employees understand that working from home means reclaiming time in the day. We expect to see this trend continue as employers offer more flexible working arrangements for employees.
