First, plugins only add functionality to the game without fundamentally changing or modifying it. Many popular modpacks make the game almost unrecognizable while providing an amazing experience for players to enjoy. Players can log in and play on servers with plugins without having to do any extra work on their end. Second, they are purely server-side and do not require players to install anything client-side.
