“People call me the painter of dancing girls,” Degas told Parisian art dealer. “It has never occurred to them that my chief interest in dancers lies in rendering movement and painting pretty clothes.” While most Impressionists opted to explore their favorite subjects only in oils, Edgar Degas took it a step further, rendering his beloved ballerinas in paint, pastel, pencil, ink, and even wax.
