I love the mountains....to me they are powerful, mysterious, and majestic. Mountains are a favourite subject of mine to paint ....having spent much time hiking amongst throughout my life. The graceful power of nature is at its most exquisite... at the junction between mountain and lake or mountain and sky.. I am drawn to the interactive play of light and the changes in the weather. In these high places nature is constantly changing and to capture a moment in time is like stopping a symphony and capturing a single note. “Into the Mystic” is a moment in time ...a moment reminiscent of my time in the north. Often I bring other elements into a painting that move me in a naturally spiritual way...in this case the moon rising. It is not usually my goal to suggest a particular place, but instead I try to bring out strongly held images that evoke a memory, a feeling or perhaps a dream...one has had. Some may think of “into The Mystic” as being in the fantasy genre, but for me, it is strongly grounded in my life experience.

Biography

I was born in Victoria, British Columbia. I studied art at the Institute Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and at the Victoria College of Art. Since my childhood I have produced works in watercolour, paper-mache sculpture, and oil/acrylic painting on canvas.

My oil and acrylic paintings are a collection of imaginative and representational realities. They are often mythopoeic landscapes that celebrate the glory innate in nature. Working with a vibrant palette provides an unlimited opportunity to represent the interactive life of colour. As I move beyond a sense of right doing and wrong doing I find a place to record personal interpretive journeys, a place of integrating creative expression, theory, and the abundant inspiration from nature. This calling of creativity and connection in nature evokes a sense of belonging and fullness. And, it is this feeling that I hope to share in my paintings.
