Black Doves Season 1 Review

If you're looking for a compelling new drama to unwind with on a dark night, six-part spy thriller Black Doves is a must-watch. Produced by Joe Barton (the genius behind Giri/Haji and The Lazarus Project), the film is incredibly smart and engaging, with stalwarts Sarah Lancashire, Ben Whishaw and Keira Knightley in fantastic roles. She's having the time of her life. Black Doves is streaming now on Afdah Info.
Knightley plays Helen Webb, the intelligent and submissive wife of British Secretary of Defense Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan). Her biggest concerns are getting her twins to school on time, organizing the family's Christmas fundraiser and keeping their beautiful house spotless (The Real real estate porn is top notch).
"Keira Knightley is having the time of her life in this incredible role."
Helen isn't the only person she says she is - she's a spy working for a shadowy organisation called "The Black Doves", to which she secretly belonged, passing on government secrets for ten years. She also had an affair with a civil servant called Jason Davies (Andrew Koji), who is murdered on London's picturesque South Bank in a thrilling opening sequence. If you think hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, wait until you see Keira Knightley's breakup with her boyfriend. It's epic.
Sarah Lancashire doesn't have a lot of screen time in this first episode, but she asserts her authority in the scenes she does, and it remains unclear who the head of intelligence, Mrs. Reid, is. Her name and demeanor as the school librarian is misleading, as she is not to be taken lightly. Frustrated by Helen's extracurricular activities and the possibility that her cover-up will be exposed (cutting her lucrative relationship with Downing Street), Mrs. Reid calls in the big (little) gun, Sam, because she needs to ensure that any threats to Helen are neutralised. Black Doves is streaming now on Afdah Info.
