Blepharoplasty: What is it?
A board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facial plastics and reconstructive surgery performs blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, a minimally invasive procedure. The purpose of eyelid surgery is to either remove excess sagging skin from the upper or lower eyelids, correct vision issues, or improve appearance. To treat a medical condition or reverse the signs of aging, eyelid surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the method.
 What Is the Blepharoplasty Procedure?
Fatty deposits surround the eye and are held in place by a thin, fibrous septum. The fibrous septum layer of tissues that surround the orbital area may become more relaxed than usual as you get older. This makes it possible for the orbital fat to significantly bulge, which can result in the appearance of "bags" or an unsightly "hood" on the upper eyelid. Depending on the recommendations of your surgeon and the areas of concern of the patient, surgery may be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids or on both.

Your surgeon can remove excess skin and reposition bulging fatty deposits during upper eyelid surgery by making an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid. Before sending you back home to recover, your surgeon will use sutures to close the incision, dress the wound, and closely monitor you once the desired outcome has been achieved.

One of two methods is used for lower eyelid blepharoplasty:

An incision is made below the lower eyelash line and extended laterally when excess skin is present. This allows the surgeon to reposition fatty tissue, remove excess skin, and secure close the incision with sutures.
A transconjunctival approach involves making an incision within the lower eyelid so that there is no excess skin present. Using this method, the surgeon can close the incision with dissolving stitches that leave no visible scar and remove, reposition, and secure fatty deposits.
After surgery, the upper or lower eyelid incision is closed with sutures, which are removed from the office during a follow-up appointment and remain in place for 5-7 days.

When Should Eyelid Surgery Be Performed?
A common surgical procedure called blepharoplasty is used to fix aesthetic issues that can hurt a person's confidence and self-esteem. It is frequently used:

Remove loose or sagging skin around the orbit that affects the natural crease of the upper eyelid or makes it hard to see.
Reposition and fix fatty deposits that cause the upper or lower eyelids to puff up.
Correct the undereye bags.
Reverse lower eyelid drooping.
Get rid of wrinkles and lines.

This procedure is frequently used to treat a variety of medical conditions in addition to cosmetic issues. These circumstances include:

Ptosis. Drooping skin is the direct result of this condition, which affects the upper eyelids of one or both eyes. Ptosis can be corrected by shortening the eyelid muscle, which can be congenital (present at birth) or develop later in life.
Ectropion. The condition causes the skin around the eyelid to droop and turn outward, affecting the lower eyelid. It may cause watery eyes, wind sensitivity, and eye irritation.
Entropion. Entropion has the same effect on the lower eyelid as ectropion. The condition causes the lower eyelid skin to turn inward, increasing the likelihood of corneal irritation and infection.
