MyGM, that NBA 2K21 MT Coins places you into the shoes of a team's General Manager, is a mode worth mentioning. You call the shots for everything from roster moves, trades, ticket prices, marketing, and personnel decisions in hopes of building a successful franchise. It is a sports management simulation fantasy, but changes here are just skin deep. You'll undergo awkwardly animated and written dialogue scenarios to handle relationships within your organization--such as how I chatted to RJ Barrett about the way he used to play clarinet in order to improve his sanity stats, or became the yes-man of head coach Tom Thibodeau to keep him happy. MyGM's menus are also flooded in a means that makes it difficult to navigate and get a grip of how to invest your limited time and resources through the season. I've really enjoyed this mode in the past with its RPG-like sensibilities, but it is one that requires a serious revamp.
I will run down every other mode of play or attribute from NBA 2K21, however I'd really only be going through the laundry list of items we've seen in years past--but I really do want to point to the continuing addition of the WNBA. It's a great attribute for current fans and people who want to familiarize themselves with WNBA players and teams. Where this falls short is the WNBA is relegated to just season play, and the inclusion of female participant production is only featured in the upcoming next-gen variations of the game.
NBA 2K21 shows that the only basketball sim we have now has mostly stagnated. It is a complete package, for certain, but one which demonstrates little-to-no motivation to meaningfully improve upon itself. That doesn't eliminate the powerful foundation that makes NBA 2K an enjoyable and rewarding time. However, when you go through precisely the same grind and the exact same procedure with only superficial modifications, you just get burnt out faster than years prior. If chunk is still life, NBA 2K21 is as good a model as some to select, but even the greatest ballers require a rest.
