International Ice Skating Union (ISU) President Kim Jae-yeol and President of the Samsung Economic Research Institute has been elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Kim was elected as a new member of the IOC with 72 out of 73 votes cast in favor of his election at the IOC's 141st Session in Mumbai, India, on Sunday (ET). He is the 12th Korean to be elected to the IOC.

The son-in-law of the late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee, Kim has continued to expand his influence in winter sports. He has served as president of the Korean Ice Sports Federation, vice chairman of the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee, vice president of the Korean Olympic Committee, member of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing 2022 Games, and in June last year became the first non-European to be elected president of the ISU.

S. Korean sports administrator Kim Jae-youl nominated for IOC membership

His election to the IOC will help strengthen South Korea's position in international sports diplomacy. IOC members have a great deal of power in deciding key issues such as the selection of Olympic venues.

South Korea has had a total of 12 IOC members, starting with Lee Ki-bung in 1955, followed by Lee Sang-baek, Kim Jang-young, Kim Taek-soo, Park Jong-kyu, Kim Yong-yong, Lee Kun-hee, Park Yong-sung, Moon Dae-sung, Yoo Seung-min, and Lee Ki-heung. Korean Olympic Committee President Lee Ki-heung and Athletes' Commissioner Yoo Seung-min remain active IOC members.

France currently has the most IOC members with four. South Korea now has three IOC members, joining China, Japan, Italy, and Sweden.

Athletes' Commissioner Yoo Seung-min will step down after next year's Paris Games, while Korean Sports Ministry President Lee Ki-heung will serve until 2025, when he turns 70. Park In-bee, the "golf queen" who was recently named South Korea's newest IOC candidate, will stand for election during next year's Paris Olympics.
