Kraven The Hunter Review - Theflixtor

We started 2024 with Madame Web, a pathetic film that tried to do something in the Spider-Man universe without actually having Spider-Man in it. And we end the year with Kraven the Hunter, where the producers continue to explore the comic book universe while avoiding anything even remotely resembling a quality film. hese spinoffs have been weird, but this year has been especially taxing on the senses, as Sony Pictures doesn't seem to fully understand what kind of entertainment it wants to make. Kraven the Hunter has a notable cast of characters (dating back to its 1964 debut), but the film completely fails to explore superpowers, family histories, and villains, resulting in a shockingly lifeless viewing experience and increasingly disappointing acting conventions. It's hard to say this film is the worst of the Spider-Man series, but it's pretty damn close, as the entire film is a major mess of whether it passes for a superhero epic.
The son of Russian crime boss Nikolai (Russell Crowe), Sergei (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) spent his formative years trying to break free from his father's obsession with weakness. After the death of his mother, on a hunting trip to Africa, Sergei is put to the test when a lion threatens the life of his younger brother Dmitri (Fred Hechinger). Unable to shoot the animal, Sergei is captured by the lion and quickly mortally wounded. He is rescued by Calypso (Ariana DeBose), the daughter of a Voodoo priestess, who possesses a vial containing a magical serum that grants strength to dying people. The lion's blood mixes with Sergei's wounds and transforms him into a super-strong apex predator who retains his animalistic abilities. Years later, Sergei transforms into Kraven the Hunter, a top-notch assassin who keeps a to-do list of villains he wants to kill. He now needs the help of Calypso, a well-connected lawyer, while Alexei (Alessandro Nivola) rises to fame when he discovers that Russian gangsters are trying to take down Nikolai by showing off his rhino powers.
"Kraven the Hunter" was written by J.C. Chandor, who has done a great job so far, but has not quite figured out the comedic approach to the film. The film starts with a demonstration of Kraven's abilities during a stint in a Russian prison, but the script quickly shifts into origin mode after Sergei reunites with his fearful father, who demands full manhood from his sons after his mother commits suicide.
