The LABS initiative aims to promote safer work stipulations for employees of manufacturing units through the mitigation of preventable fire protection, electrical and structural construction risks in key manufacturing countries in the apparel, footwear sectors , accessories and household clothing in a focused way.

It is currently operational in India, Vietnam and Cambodia, and the expansion to Indonesia is a strategic step that aligns with the program's ambition to mitigate security risks at key international apparel manufacturing locations in the sector.

The initiative will work in all essential manufacturing centers in Indonesia and is expected to benefit about 275,000 workers.

"With the launch of the LABS Initiative in Indonesia, we look forward to collaborating and enhancing trendy tactics to help provide safer work prerequisites for employees that are also aligned with the country's laws and regulations," said Kimron Manik, construction sustainability director, established construction directorate, Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia.

As a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder effort that collectively brings together brands, business stakeholders, government agencies, and non-profit organizations, LABS promotes industry-wide transformation to promote safe practices and create safer work environments.

Manufacturers including Gap Inc., Target, VF Corporation, and Walmart currently participate in the LABS program.

LABS assists in factory assessment and presents a framework for monitoring, mitigating and remediating identified security hazards. Since the launch of the program in 2019, LABS has achieved tremendous development by reaching more than 837,000 employees and conducting more than 400 factory assessments. LABS has engaged with factories to remediate issues that have been recognized at some point in the assessments and achieved a 77% remediation rate.

In addition to assessments and remediation efforts, LABS provides capacity building support to stakeholders through education programs and technical support to enhance their existing expertise and capabilities and build security. To date, the Initiative has conducted more than 650 security trainings.
