There seems to be some kind of unspoken rule in filmmaking that holiday-themed movies should be as sensory-friendly as possible. It's an understandable effort, since the ultimate goal of these works is to convey gentle emotions and seasonal relief, but a little more bite and intellect is always welcome. "Our Little Secret" isn't so much about Christmas atmosphere, but it's a song about Christmas gatherings and family hustle and bustle. Screenwriter Hayley DeDominicis (in her debut) goes so far as to create an adventure premise that creates a messy relationship where everyone is a liar to some degree. It's a setup for devilish fun, but the script veers straight into sitcom territory, presenting a series of lame, contrived conflicts and moments of humiliation. "Our Little Secret" doesn't have much energy. Director Stephen Herek tried to rely less on the film and more on the charm of the acting and the easily avoidable difficulties of his protagonists.
Avery and Logan were best friends for most of their childhood, and their relationship blossomed into love. But while a big opportunity in life leads Avery to London, Logan's despair destroys their future. Ten years later, Logan is dating Cathy (Katie Baker) and trying to make it in commercial real estate. The couple is on their way to Cathy's family home for the holidays to greet her demanding mother, Erica (Kristin Chenoweth). Avery's longtime boyfriend, Cathy's brother Cameron (John Rudnitsky), also comes to celebrate. The reunion of the ex-lovers shocks both of them, and they plan to keep their past a secret. Logan needs Avery's help with his job, while Avery needs Logan's help to convince Erica, who doesn't like Logan. As the Christmas festivities begin, the pair desperately try to cover up their scheme, but they find that the rest of the family is also preoccupied with their private affairs.
Our Little Secret begins in 1996 and follows the story of Avery and Logan's friendship, which eventually grows stronger. This romantic relationship comes to a horrifying end when Logan, unable to cope with the loss of his girlfriend, rushes into proposing to a woman who is moving forward in life. It's a touch of darkness in a silly movie, and perhaps a psychological space worth exploring in its own right. But that's not what the script wants, and while it sells itself through a summary of historical and pop-cultural moments that jumps ten years into the future to reunite former lovers and wisely sidestep political turmoil and a certain public health crisis, it takes the time to celebrate some of TV success.
