Henry Gibbs Scars After Laser Hair Removal Aren’t Always True Scars!
Back To Blogs List
If you have recently undergone laser hair removal surgery and are worried that your skin might be scarring, it’s important first to check whether or not it’s really a scar. Of course, laser hair removal treatments can cause numerous complications, and scarring is one of them.

However, scarring following laser hair removal is rare. In fact, scars are usually a result of a lack of experience by the laser technician or operator. Similarly, though, there are other side effects of laser hair removal that are not permanent but can look similar to a scar – and we’ll be considering these today.

So, when are scars after laser hair removal surgery, not scars? We’ll be looking at this question today to help you understand whether your post-hair removal scar might be something a little less worrying after all.

Not All Skin Pigmentation is a Scar!

Suppose you’ve recently undergone laser hair removal, and you’ve found that your skin seems to have changed color. In that case, it can be easy to assume that it’s a scar. However, this could just be pigmentation – commonly referred to as “burn marks.”

As explained by the Beautiful Canadian Laser and Skincare Clinic, “Some people call these scars, but they are not quite the same thing. Permanent, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can create a ‘burn mark’ if a laser was misused during hair removal sessions.”

Causes of Burn Marks

So, what can cause these burn marks? Well, there are several potential causes of burn marks. To this end, we should start by explaining that burn marks are more common on tanned skin. This is because lasers are attracted naturally to more pigmented skin.

However, that’s not the only risk factor. The skill of the operator and the quality of the laser machine being used will also impact whether you develop burn marks following your laser hair removal procedure.

Suppose that your operator is using a high-quality and reliable laser hair removal machine. In that case, you should be at much less risk of developing burn marks after the treatment. For example, specially designed laser machines such as the Lightsheer Duet by Lumenis are created with hair removal in mind. This makes them much more suitable for this role than some other laser machines. Moreover, if the operator doesn’t have experience with the machine, they could set the laser too high. Unfortunately, this simple mistake can also cause burn marks.
