  • The Penguin S01e08 Review
The showrunners could have linked Oz's transformation from gangster to monster to a childhood trauma or hatred of society. But they didn't. Because, while the latter was true, Oz was never truly hated by his mother or siblings. In fact, Frances released Oz even though she knew he had committed such a heinous act. Sure, she did it because she was ambitious, but she was Oz's biggest cheerleader until she realized who he really was. So this excuse doesn't really hold up. The real re  . . .

The Penguin's great achievement is that he somehow transformed a perennial B-team player into one of the best Batman villains of all time. And that's quite an accomplishment. Oz Cobblepot, or simply Oz Cobb, as this version repeatedly emphasizes, has always been instantly recognizable, in part because he's ridiculous. Not in "Big Things, Small Things." Here in the season finale, he's terrifying, psychopathic, and downright evil. In the end, the HBO series presents a leg  . . .

  • Heretic (2024) Movie Review: Hugh Grant Blesses A Passable Thriller Of Circular Theological Debates
         1 day ago
The entire team of the original A Quiet Place, including the intellectual property itself, more or less capitalized on the reputation of the first film, a reputation that quickly proved that this production could not sustain for longer than one airing. Last but not least, screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are trying to turn the success of a neat little premise (unless you think about it for more than 15 seconds) into a success story for two struggling careers. As a writer and director. No  . . .
  • Hugh Grant Bedevils In Heretic, A Theological Debate Wrapped In Horror Trappings
         1 day ago
What is the one true religion? This theological question is at the heart of Heretic, a gothic horror show that explores the mysteries of faith and the forces of evil. When Sister Burns (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) show up to Mr. Reid's (Hugh Grant) house in an attempt to convert him to the Church of Latter-day Saints, they find a middle-aged man in a daze, someone he once knew years ago, charmingly confused in a way that only Grant could be. But things quickly change   . . .
  • Here Movie 2024 Review

Some who have heard about the film may have the mistaken impression that "Here" is set solely inside the living room of the house across several decades. That is only partially true. Although Here is primarily made up of interior scenes in the living room, there are many scenes in the film that take place outdoors, before the house was built in 1907. These pre-1907 exterior scenes are ultimately unnecessary and disturbing. These pre-1907 scenes take place on the land when it was sti  . . .

The film was advertised as a film focused on Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, but some viewers may be surprised to see that Hanks doesn't appear until the first 20 minutes. The first part of the film is mainly about Richard's parents, played by Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly, who reminisce about American life in the 1950s and 60s, with all the good and bad. As Richard and Margaret grow up, Richard's parents also age, and we see them succumb to age and illness, taking us on the rollercoaste  . . .

What if your dreams came true by becoming someone else? You dream of transforming your disfigured face into someone better looking like Sebastian Stan, only to find that good looks don't necessarily mean success or happiness. Writer-director Aaron Schimberg keeps this in mind as he delves into a cautionary tale that shows how changing your appearance on the outside doesn't make any difference on the inside. One of those people is aspiring actor Edward (Sebastian Stan), who has neurofibro  . . .

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story – BRWC Review. By Simon Thompson. When I think of the perfect casts in film history, the usual suspects come to mind: Sean Connery as James Bond, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, Robert De Niro as Jake La Motta, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, Brad Pitt Darden as Tyler, Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, etc. For me that award will forever go to the absolute genius who decided to cast a lanky, unknown 25 year old straight out of drama school named Chr  . . .

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Theflixtor explores Reeve's background, his past before he was famous (his broken family, his successful but disapproving father), and his life after fame (the two most important love stories of his life, his love of sports and... the outdoors), but within the limitations inherent in a standalone document. Bonote and Ettedgui connect his fear of commitment in terms of love to a difficult and emotionally tense childhood, but stop there and settle fo  . . .
