South Korea's women's hockey team has beaten Japan, which is one spot higher in the world rankings, to reach the final and win its first gold medal in nine years.
South Korea defeated Japan 4-3 on a shootout in the quarterfinals at Gongshu Canal Sports Park Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, on Friday to reach the final for the first time since Incheon in 2014. The Koreans, who met Japan in the quarterfinals at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games, where they finished fourth with a 0-2 loss, were out for revenge against the Japanese.

South Korea opened the scoring in the first quarter when Seo Jung-eun (31) converted a set piece from a penalty corner. In the third quarter, Park Seung-ae (23) added a goal to make it 2-0, but Japan conceded two goals in the fourth quarter, including a penalty stroke, to force a shootout.
Korea sent Seo Jung-eun, Chun Eun-bi (31), Park Ho-jung (27), Ahn Hyo-joo (35), and Choi Hye-jin (28) to the shootout, where the game was tied at 3-3 before Choi's last shot was saved by the Korean goalkeeper for a 4-3 victory.
A shootout is a type of "penalty shootout" used to decide the winner of a regulation game that ends in a tie. Unlike soccer, a shootout consists of a player on the field going one-on-one with a goalie 23 meters from the goal and having eight seconds to score a goal with a hockey stick. Five players from each team participate in the shootout. 카지노사이트
The Korean women's hockey team is a powerhouse, having won five gold medals at the Asian Games, the most of any team in history.
Starting with a silver medal in New Delhi in 1982, the first time women's hockey was included in the Asian Games, the team went on to win gold at the next four editions.
From 2002 in Busan to 2008 in Guangzhou, Korea lost the gold medal to China, but returned to the top of the podium in Incheon 2014. As of March 3, South Korea is ranked 11th by the International Ice Hockey Federation (FIH). Japan and China are ranked 10th and 12th, respectively.
In the tournament, Korea won all four of its group games by large margins, with the exception of a 1-1 draw against powerhouse India (ranked 7th in the world).
They tied India with three wins and a draw, but lost on goal difference and finished second in the group to reach the quarterfinals.
The winner of the quarterfinal against Japan will play the winner of the semifinal against home team China, who beat India to reach the final, on July 7.
