In this oriental "sumi-e" inkwash portrayal of bamboo (with tones digitally reversed), the diagonal stem reminds me of the type of sword used by traditional Japanese samurai warriors. The rather dramatic effect produced by digitally reversing the tones seems to echo the power of the sword. "The Seven Samurai" is one of my favourite films for the same reason that, as a meditator, I enjoy oriental artwork: central to both the sumi-e art approach and that of the samurai is a sense of acutely conscious, meditative focus. (Try this painting on a black t-shirt!)
