Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Theflixtor explores Reeve's background, his past before he was famous (his broken family, his successful but disapproving father), and his life after fame (the two most important love stories of his life, his love of sports and... the outdoors), but within the limitations inherent in a standalone document. Bonote and Ettedgui connect his fear of commitment in terms of love to a difficult and emotionally tense childhood, but stop there and settle for a simple answer, even though a more complex and complicated answer would have portrayed Reeve in a less flattering light. Produced with the cooperation of Reeve's children, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story occasionally alludes to the depression and despair Reeve must have experienced after his life-changing accident, but otherwise maintains a positive, even optimistic perspective, focusing primarily on: Reeve was committed to disability rights in the last decade of his life. Bonhaute and Ettedgui are at times willing to acknowledge the emotional toll of Reeve's day-to-day care, especially on his primary caregiver and wife, Dana, but it rarely lasted long. (Dana died of lung cancer just 18 months after her husband.)
Still, there's little doubt that anyone who came to love Christopher Reeve as Superman will not be moved, and at times brought to tears, by Bonhaute and Ettedgui's work. This documentary will be about flawed human beings trying, sometimes successfully, sometimes unsuccessfully to make sense of an accident that irrevocably changed their lives, and trying to make sense of the experience and find a way forward. If anything, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story reminds us of the immense value of human connection in embracing mortality, regardless of fame (or lack thereof). To watch the latest Hollywood movies, visit Flixtor Movies.
