law firm1 What Is SLP Filing?
Back To Blogs List

SLP Filing is a method used by attorneys to file legal documents on behalf of another person or business entity. The Supreme Court of the United States uses SLP filing when certifying a petition for a Federal Court case. This method was designed for emergency use by lower level law firms and law students because of the paper-work reduction, speed and confidentiality associated with this process. All of the briefs in the Federal Courts are handled electronically. This means that there is significantly less paperwork involved than is required by many State Court cases.

Any attorney handling any case that has the SLP filing supreme court status should make sure they know exactly what is needed in order to properly file that case. If a party is filing electronically then filing status should indicate that the filing party has filed all of their necessary documents in the proper manner and has reviewed them to ensure that they are complete and correct. Any documents that are missing or incomplete should be immediately filled out and filed. All references to the party should also be completed and attached to the appropriate case.

There are many cases that do not involve Federal Court certifications or stay orders. In these cases the filing party may only need to fill out a simple legal form and then send the document to the court to be filed. In many cases, the case number, case name and venue are all that is needed. The legal fees will be handled by the party filing the petition. It is important to understand however that the party must ensure that they fill out all of the necessary paperwork or they will not be considered a valid party in the case. Failure to file legal documents with a complete level of precision will have an adverse affect on the outcome of the case.

Any case that is submitted to the court must include a request for leave to the court. This request must be filed with the clerk of the court along with any other necessary documents. Leave requests are a way for an attorney to request leave on a particular case based on a situation that is outside the scope of the attorney's practice. leave requests must be filed within three days of the date of the case start.

All filing deadlines must be met. Filing deadlines for briefs must be met no later than 30 days prior to the case start time. Cases that must be heard before deadlines will be listed on the court calendar for the applicable filing date.

The last step that must be complete is the filing of the petition for leave to the court. The party filing the petition must attach any necessary documents to their petition in a proper way. It is important that the case number be included on the petition along with any attachments that need to be included with the court filing. Once the petition is completed, it will be returned to the clerk of court for signature.
